Salt has been used by humans for thousands of years, from food preservation to seasoning. It was, and still is, used to preserve and season food, and it is important in medicine as well as religious ceremonies, all of which have made it a valuable trade commodity. Some early cultures even used it as a form of currency. In the Middle East, salt was used to ceremonially seal an agreement, and the ancient Hebrews made a "covenant of salt" with God and sprinkled salt on their offerings to show their trust in him. Salt is important, so important that Jesus uses salt as a metaphor in today’s scripture.
