The obvious theme in this parable is the idea of counting the cost. Anything worthwhile in life comes with a cost, that is true in all aspects of our lives. Wherever there is the gain of something meaningful, there is usually some sacrifice.
Nowhere is this truer than in the matter of following Jesus. We know that salvation is offered to us as a free gift, but receiving it comes at a high price, there are no exceptions to this truth., and the truth of this matter is that there is no “salvation” except “lordship salvation” Salvation without the acceptance of the fact that Jesus is Lord, as well as savior is required. In fact, the surrender to Christ is an important aspect of divinely produced saving faith, not something added to faith.
